Addressing Material Adhesion and Clogging in Raw Coal Bunkers: Improving Discharge Conditions with Wear-Resistant Polymer Liners
Time : Oct 30, 2026

Raw coal bunkers are frequently exposed to damp coal fines and gangue (waste rock), leading to the accumulation of material that adheres to and cakes onto the bunker walls. High-polymer wear-resistant liners offer an effective solution for mines facing these operational challenges. Damp coal fines, characterized by reduced flowability, tend to stick to bunker walls, building up in layers and causing the discharge channel to narrow. This results in erratic material flow—alternating between surges and sluggish movement—and, in severe cases, complete blockage of the bunker. Such blockages typically necessitate a production shutdown for manual cleaning, which disrupts continuous operations, imposes a heavy physical burden on personnel, and complicates production scheduling.

To address the persistent issues of damp coal adhesion and the erosive wear caused by gangue, high-polymer wear-resistant liners leverage the material's inherent self-lubricating properties. The low coefficient of friction on the liner surface prevents damp coal fines from adhering, thereby eliminating the conditions that lead to material arching and wall buildup. Furthermore, the material’s high toughness ensures excellent wear resistance against the constant impact of falling gangue and the long-term abrasive friction of the material, keeping the bunker wall surfaces smooth and intact over time.

Once installed on the inner walls of a raw coal bunker, these liners allow material to slide down naturally, minimizing caking and ensuring a more stable discharge flow. The liners are moderate in weight and can be cut and shaped on-site to fit specific bunker dimensions, offering flexible installation options suitable for retrofitting various types of raw coal bunkers. Implementing these liners reduces the need for frequent shutdowns for manual cleaning, lessens the labor-intensive task of clearing blockages, and ensures the smooth, consistent operation of the material discharge process.

Because operating conditions vary across different mining sites—depending on factors such as material moisture content, gangue concentration, and bunker structure—the actual performance of the liners may be influenced by site-specific conditions. Before selecting and installing these liners, it is advisable to conduct a comprehensive assessment based on the specific material characteristics and bunker dimensions at the mine. This ensures the selection of the appropriate high-polymer liner specifications and installation methods, effectively mitigating the common mining industry challenge of material adhesion and bunker blockage.
