How Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene Wear-Resistant Liners Solve Coal Blockage in Coal-Fired Power Plants
Time : 26/11/2025

In coal-fired power plants, the coal bunker serves as the critical "throat" of the fuel supply system. However, this key component has long suffered from dual challenges: material adhesion and severe wear. Traditional steel liners often struggle with sticky wet coal or fine coal powder, leading to frequent "bridging" and "ratholing" inside the bunkers. This forces units to reduce load or even shut down for hazardous manual cleaning.

To address this persistent industry issue, Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMW-PE) wear-resistant liners have emerged as an effective solution. This high-performance polymer material, with its extremely high molecular weight, offers unique advantages that surpass even steel:

First, it provides excellent non-stick properties and self-lubrication. UHMW-PE liners have a very low surface friction coefficient, essentially creating a smooth, "slide-like" armor for the bunker walls. This prevents coal and coal powder from adhering, allowing material to flow smoothly under its own weight in a "mass flow" pattern, fundamentally eliminating the risk of bunker blockage.

Second, it delivers remarkable wear resistance and impact strength. Its abrasion resistance is 4-8 times greater than that of ordinary carbon steel, easily withstanding the long-term scouring and wear from coal and other materials. Even when large coal chunks fall, its excellent impact resistance effectively absorbs energy, preventing damage to the bunker structure and significantly extending its service life.

Practical applications in key areas such as power plant coal bunkers and chutes have demonstrated outstanding results: manual cleaning is virtually eliminated, shutdowns for maintenance are drastically reduced, liner lifespan is extended multiple times, and overall maintenance costs are significantly lowered. This not only resolves operational pain points but also delivers substantial economic benefits and enhanced safety.
