Boron-containing polyethylene sheets: The superior value of a new type of nuclear radiation shielding material
Time : 28/01/2026

Boron-containing polyethylene (BPE) sheets are a new type of neutron radiation shielding material. Due to their superior performance, they have been widely used in key fields such as nuclear power, medical care, and national defense, and are even exported overseas, becoming a preferred material for nuclear radiation protection. The core protective principle of BPE sheets stems from the highly effective properties of boron. Boron has a large reaction cross-section with neutrons, allowing it to completely absorb neutrons before they react with hydrogen in the material, thus blocking radiation propagation at the source and achieving comprehensive shielding, effectively avoiding the harm of nuclear radiation and neutron radiation to human health and society.

In addition to its core radiation resistance capabilities, boron-containing polyethylene (BPE) sheets also possess multiple superior properties. They utilize a uniformly distributed boron element ratio, resulting in a consistent structure with no shielding dead zones, eliminating radiation leakage from seams. Their mechanical strength far surpasses that of traditional materials, exhibiting high impact resistance, toughness, and resistance to breakage and deformation, while also facilitating easy installation.

Compared to traditional shielding materials such as lead, boron-containing polyethylene sheets have a lower density and lighter weight, making them much easier to transport, cut, drill, and shape. They are also corrosion-resistant and aging-resistant, exhibit stable performance and a long service life under normal conditions, and possess heat resistance, dimensional stability, electrical insulation, and long-lasting antistatic properties, making them suitable for complex working conditions.

Currently, boron-containing polyethylene sheets have been widely used in nuclear power plants, nuclear reactors, scientific research laboratories, and other scenarios. They can be used to make nuclear experimental containers, neutron traps, control rod materials, etc., providing safety guarantees for nuclear research work of units such as CNPC and the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and playing an irreplaceable role in the field of neutron and radiation protection.
