Boron-containing polyethylene sheet: A new generation of composite material for high-efficiency neutron protection
Time : 25/12/2025

Boron-containing polyethylene (BPE) sheets are high-performance composite materials made by uniformly dispersing boron compounds (such as boron carbide) in an ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene matrix. Due to their unique composite structure, BPE sheets play an irreplaceable role in key radiation protection fields such as nuclear energy, medical applications, national defense, and scientific research.

The core advantage of boron-containing polyethylene (BPE) sheets lies in their superior neutron shielding capability. Hydrogen atoms in polyethylene effectively slow down fast neutrons, while the added boron (especially the high-absorption-cross-section boron-10 isotope) effectively captures these slowed thermal neutrons. The two work synergistically to achieve highly effective protection. Compared to traditional lead shielding materials, it offers neutron shielding while also being low in density, lightweight, tough, and strong.

In terms of physicochemical properties, boron-containing polyethylene sheets exhibit excellent performance. They are corrosion-resistant, resistant to various chemical media, have a wide operating temperature range (-70℃ to 90℃), and have a smooth, easy-to-clean surface. The products are highly customizable: the boron content can be adjusted between 5% and 30% to match different protection requirements; sheet thicknesses can be customized from 3 mm to 300 mm.

In practical applications, boron-containing polyethylene (BPE) sheets are a critical safety barrier. In the nuclear energy industry, they are used for reactor shells, control rooms, and piping shielding; in the medical field, they are an important component of the walls and protective screens in radiotherapy rooms and CT scan rooms; in defense and aerospace, they provide a reliable radiation protection layer for nuclear submarine reactors and spacecraft, significantly reducing radiation dose rates in actual measurements; and in scientific research and environmental protection, they are widely used for laboratory isolation and the lining of nuclear waste storage containers.
