Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMW-PE) idlers: A new high-efficiency and energy-saving option for belt conveyors.

UHMW-PE idlers are core support components of belt conveyors. Using ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMW-PE) with a molecular weight of over 3 million as the main body, combined with a metal shaft, high-precision bearings, and a composite sealing structure, they have become an ideal replacement for steel idlers due to their superior performance and are widely used in various harsh working conditions.


Compared to traditional steel idlers, UHMW-PE idlers offer significant advantages. Their wear resistance is 7 times that of ordinary carbon steel; their surface is self-lubricating, non-stick, and does not accumulate scale, significantly reducing cleaning workload; their weight is only 1/3 that of steel idlers, facilitating installation and transportation and reducing labor intensity; their low coefficient of friction can reduce conveyor power consumption by 10%-15% and noise by 10-15 dB, achieving both energy saving and noise reduction.

Ultra-high molecular weight polymer (UHMWPE) idlers also possess strong corrosion and impact resistance, are resistant to acid, alkali, salt, and seawater corrosion, and do not become brittle even at -40℃. They are not easily cracked upon impact, effectively protecting the conveyor belt. Even if the idler jams, it is unlikely to scratch the belt, extending the conveyor belt's lifespan by more than 20%. Their sealed design results in a long maintenance-free cycle, eliminating the need for frequent grease replenishment under normal operating conditions, significantly reducing maintenance costs.


UHMWPE idlers commonly have diameters of 89-159mm and lengths of 190-2500mm, making them suitable for various belt conveyors. They are applicable to dusty, humid, and corrosive environments such as coal mines, cement plants, ports, and chemical plants. Under the same operating conditions, the lifespan of UHMWPE idlers is 3-5 times that of steel idlers, offering outstanding overall cost-effectiveness and making them a preferred component for upgrading modern conveyor systems.
